Research shows millennials are all about prejuvenation, a new term that refers to when smart young women start non-invasive beauty treatments like Botox®, fillers and chemical peels earlier in order to prevent aging—rather than correcting it.

The recent American Academy Of Facial Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) annual member survey saw 72 percent of facial plastic surgeons with an increase in cosmetic procedures in patients under 30. This is a significant increase from 2017, where over half of members noted this influx of younger patients. In fact, this year’s survey reveals a 24 percent increase in cosmetic surgery or injectables in patients under age 30 since 2013 (58 percent to 72 percent).

Millennials are onto something. When done preventatively, facial muscles that cause wrinkles can be trained to move less, stopping wrinkles before they start. The prejuvenation trend illustrates the growth in patients who wish to remain youthful rather than turn back the clock on signs of aging later.

“The advances in minimally invasive technologies and demand for non-surgical treatments grows each year, with many millennials picking Botox for routine wrinkle treatment, hyaluronic acid fillers for lip augmentation and lasers or chemical peels as standard practice for slowing down the clock on sun damage,” says Phillip R. Langsdon, AAFPRS President. “Our younger patients are monitoring the aging process and taking prevention seriously.”

Thanks to well documented childhoods, millennials fully understand the power of an image. And now, they want to control that image. With modern techniques that offer subtle yet effective outcomes, this younger generation is able to indulge in some ‘facial tune-ups’ at their local facial plastic surgeon’s office, before the first wrinkle ever sets in.

The AAFPRS reminds patients to always go to a board certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in surgery of the face, head and neck. Select a physician based on qualifications, not price to stay safe and get the results you’re looking (to search for a board certified qualified surgeon near you, please visit: www.aafprs.org/patient/finder/finder.cfm).
